Higher Education

If there is one thing every business needs to succeed, it's human capital, and that's one thing Central SC has a whole lot of. In the center of the region, nearly 40% of the population 25 years and over, have a bachelor's degree or higher. Thanks to our region's centers for higher education, which include: four technical colleges, six independent senior colleges, and a nationally ranked research university, Central SC will never be short on talent.

University of South Carolina

Established in 1801, the University of South Carolina has consistently ranked as one of the nation's top research universities. The University remains the oldest state institution in the United States to be continuously supported by public funds. From the historic Horseshoe located just blocks from the South Carolina State House, the University has grown into a 290-acre campus and is expanding west towards the Congaree River.

South Carolina State University

South Carolina State University is a senior comprehensive institution of approximately 5,000 students engaged in quality baccalaureate, masters', and doctoral degree programs. Since 1986 SC State has maintained a legacy of excellence in education, exceeding national academic benchmarks, and providing students with world class education. SC State offers bachelor's degrees in biology, education, business, engineering technology, computer science/mathematics, and English language/literature. Midlands Technical College

One of the region’s most regarded technical colleges has seven different locations throughout the region, providing scores of workers with quality training and education. Midlands Technical College offers approximately 100 degree, diploma and certificates in career programs and arts and sciences. Last year, Midlands Technical College provided training for more than 100 area business and industries.

The college is also home to the Midlands Technical College's Enterprise Campus which offers a unique and innovative opportunity for enhancing economic vitality. The campus consists of 100 developable acres and offers proximity to major interstates, quality workforce, and shared technology-specific spaces. Orangeburg/Calhoun Technical College

Orangeburg-Calhoun Technical College is a comprehensive 2-year technical college that provides training for workers in new and expanding industries. OCtech offers more than 75 programs of study ranging from engineering technology and business, to computer technology. Strategically located between Columbia and Charleston, OCtech provides quality and affordable training and education for the region's workforce and industry. Newberry College

Newberry College offers students 24 majors, 31 minors and an outstanding 17:1 student-teacher ratio. The small, private institution offers degrees in Medical Technology, Biology, and Communications. The school's small size in no way characterizes it's impact on regional businesses, recently ranked as one of  U.S. News and World Report's best Regional Colleges (South). One of the region's most prized asset is it's highly skilled workforce, and the many institutions of higher education that make that possible.
