University of South Carolina

Founded in 1801, the University of South Carolina is dedicated to serving the state of South Carolina through excellence in teaching, research, and assistance to business and communities. It remains the oldest state institution in the United States to be continuously supported by public funds. From the historic Horseshoe located just blocks from the South Carolina State House, the University has grown into a 290-acre campus. With its buildings restored to their 19th-century ambiance, the Horseshoe is the home of the South Carolina Honor's College. Money Magazine has named USC as one of its Best Values in higher education. The University enrolls over 23,000 students on the Columbia campus including over 15,000 undergraduate students, 7,200 graduate students and 1,100 professional students. Students come from all 50 states and 116 countries. USC's flagship campus includes 1,091 full-time professors, who are both nationally and internationally recognized for their teaching, scholarship and research in the sciences, liberal arts, and professional fields. More than 84% of the faculty hold earned doctorates, and 147 faculty members hold chairs and research professorships. The largest of the three major research universities in the state, the University of South Carolina provides a diverse range of course offerings, from liberal arts to the technical sciences as part of the 350 degree programs including 179 masters and 64 doctorate fields.

Highlights in Research, Instruction and Service

USC's serveral hundred research laboratories pursue some of the most sophisticated scientific and technological research in the world.   Its 100 institutes and centers, many of which work closely with industry, include Centers for Information Technology, Electrochemical Engineering, Electron Microscopy, Mechanics of Materials and Non-Destructive Evaluation, Water Research and Policy, and Photonics and Microelectronics, as well as a wind tunnel that studies airplane, building, and automobile design.  USC's 2,000 full-time faculty research everything from compressing electronic-image data to using aquatic plants for pollution clean-up to synthesizing wires, switches, and transistors based on single molecules.
 
 
 
 
USC's Center for Manufacturing and Technology provides a virtual consulting network, with sites across the state, that allows businesses to consult with faculty face-to-face via free multimedia teleconferences adn obtain advice on export issues, international standards (ISO 9000 and ISO 14000), design problems, occupational health, and industrial ecology.
 
 
 
 
In 1999, USC opened its new $33 million Graduate Science Research Center, where researchers study ground-breaking questions in biology, chemistry, and biochemistry.
 
 
 
 
The Earth Sciences and Resources institute at USC integrates geology, hydrology, geochemistry, and geophysics with computer applications to characterize groundwater systems, geological hazards, and soil to assist with site selection and environmental assessments.
 
 
 
 
USC houses one of America's 50 largest university collections, which includes more than 7 million volumes, microfilms, and other resources, including specialties in natural history, the modern American novel, and Southern politics and culture, as well as the most sophisticated online technology available.
 
 
 
 
USC's graduate programs in public relations and advertising have been ranked in the top 15 in the nation by U.S. News and World Report, while its gradute programs in Government and International Studies are ranked in the top 20.
 
 
 
 
USC has one of the nation's top five programs for geographic information systems and remote sensing and cartography, which provide powerful resources for industrial site selection and development.
 
 
 
 
In 1998, at USC Columbia, the Department of Justice opened its National Advocacy Center, trains 15,000 federal prosecuters and solicitors a year in the latest investigative, technological, and courtroom techniques.
 
 
 
 
Faculty of USC's School of Music Department of Theatre, Speech, and Dance include renowned performers who provide free and low-cost programs throughout the year, such as at the University's Koger Center for the Arts, which also has hosted such performers as the London and Moscow Philharmonic Orchestras, James Taylor, New York City Opera, Joffrey Ballet II, Paul Taylor, Dance Company, and Leontyne Price.
